Finally. Finally a chapter that plunges the protagonist into his intended plot. Chapter Eight is where it really gets exciting. Unlike the previous chapters (except the Prologue and Chapter One), this is not a chapter filled with people having conversations – on this note, I am reminded of Tyrion Lannister of Game of Thrones that history is entirely composed of powerful men and women having conversations in grand rooms (of course I paraphrase). But the previous chapters were exactly that; people having conversations that somehow managed to keep the plot going.
But this chapter is the impetus for the whirlwind of events that are to come. This comes with a shocking discovery – almost the whole truth of the protagonist’s past (the search of which is the novel’s main plot point). This shocking discovery leads to a shocking act.
But on the nature of the discovery, it is not solely of historical nature like previous ones. It is entirely fictional, but revealing crucial bits of information pertaining to the practices of secret societies that are deeply set in history. As such, this novel was the conception of clearly defined roles and locations of clearly defined groups.
It was a fun chapter to write. It felt as if the plot was finally progressing. But for whatever its merits, I still cannot say much here. That is where The Historical Companion to The Monk’s Curse comes in. It is a book that I have been excited for for a while. A complete guide to the history of The Monk’s Curse. But until its release, and until next week’s post, happy reading (whatever and wherever that may be).
Two weeks too late! I completely missed last Wednesday (the day that this post was supposed to come out). After all, I did promise one post per week giving an insight into each chapter of The Monk’s Curse. On this note, I have two confessions to make.
Firstly, I have realised what a dismal show this topic of blog posts has put on. I promised behind the scenes and I delivered teasers. So, this week I will endeavour to correct that.
My second confession is that I am drowning under the work of being a self-published author. Not only has this kept me away from Twitter, and blogging, but it has brought all my works to a grinding halt. A book that was supposed to be published at the start of this month is get published two weeks too late. Other books that were planned for release this month will probably have to be moved on to next month. Alas, that is the price for trying to juggle so much at once.
But, onto the chapter
This is the unravelling of the tantalising plot. This is the chapter where two pivotal characters meet and where three key bits of information are passed on. Behind the scenes, this was the chapter that lulled me out of the comfort of my seat-of-the-pants writing style. That is, unlike previous chapters, I could not write this one without any planning.
Because two key characters meet here, it was especially important to decide how much to give away to the reader and to the protagonist as he continued in his search for the truth. In the end, not much was given away. What was given away was a pivotal newspaper article that only led to more intrigue. This was in itself fun to write because not only did it add another dimension and character to the story, more of which came to be elaborated on in other chapters, but because I delved into historical research for it. It took more on a journey deeper into the circumstances of the end of the Romanov Tsardom. It took me on a journey deeper into the end of the House of Medici. And, it took me further into territories of European history unchartered and clouded by the rise of the USSR and its suppression of fact through propaganda. Apart from that, another document was revealed to the protagonist. This was a brochure discussing Ottoman primogeniture. As anyone familiar with this topic know, it is a quagmire of details that are far too obscure for the lay man to understand. As such, it is not fully comprehended by the reader or the protagonist. Nevertheless, as all parts of the story do, it has its place. And that place is something that will come to rock the curse around which the book is centred.
I hope that this blog post has been refreshing. I hope it has been so for me. From here, onward and upward. Until next week.
Today marks the fourth week since my original post promising weekly additions to this blog, mapping out the behind the scenes of each chapter of The Monk’s Curse.
But first, I would like to announce an exciting venture. Writing these posts mean that they have to be strictly spoiler free. This does not make for a very interesting journey. Of course my research is mentioned as the story slowly gets fleshed out in these posts, but there is so much that is held back. To remedy this I shall be releasing a companion guide to The Monk’s Curse on the 31st of May. This guide will focus on the real history that inspired The Monk’s Curse – a novel which has heavy historical detail and background. This guide will be available on Amazon and on Prolific Works, for free.
Now, with that done, and without further ado, behind chapter four!
Unlike Chapter Three, this chapter is quite a lengthy one.
As a chapter, it is the first real delve into the head of the protagonist as he reels in shock, dismay, fear, and confusion after the events and revelations of chapters one and three. This reveals a state of mind that will come to the fore in following parts of the novel. It is also a state of mind that is particularly to note in its similarity to the state of mind of another character later in the book. Most importantly, this state of mind is what sets things in motion as the protagonist is plunged into a search for his truth.
This state is exacerbated by a conversation that the protagonist overhears. Revealing crucial information, it only deepens his desire to search for the truth. And, met with the opportunity in the next chapter, he jumps at it. This leads him to find information that ties back directly to the Prologue.
So, as with the previous chapters, this one sets the scene. It sets the scene for the unravelling of what is to become an intricate tapestry of history – a history that will be explored in the book to release on the 31st.
Until next week.
